Forgot to say, she isnt crawling yet, will move from sitting forward onto her hands but then her legs collapse under her!

Not sure on age they sit up I cant remember it was that long ago, but I am with my 8 month old DD siting in front of her when she is laying down and putting my hands out for her to hold on to and pull herself up so she is doing sit-ups she grabs on to my fingers and will pull herself on my fingers and then I just encourage her up.  I also play row row row the boat with her to give her the up down action this may encourage your LO?

From lying flat on back to sitting up? As in using stomach muscles?

My DS can just about do it, he uses one hand and goes a bit to the side though. He's 21 months! Was walking at 13 months, crawling at 8/9 months, sitting at 7 months so all about 'normal'.

I was suprised how long it took as well.

Yeah from flat on their back to sitting up. I always thought it was befoe the crawling stage as lots of friends babies are sittng up in their cots of a morning. Makes me feel better then that its all normal for her to be taking her time. Hopefully she will master this art soon. Thanks for ur replies! Its so hard not to compare your child to others it really is!!!

My little man has recently turned 9 months and just started doing this last week - each time I lay him in his cot he flips himself on his tummy and sits up and laughs at me

I don't know if this will help you but the first couple of days when he was still practicing he occasionaly seemed to get stuck on his tummy so I would tickle his sides and then he would remember how to do it again.

But I wouldn't worry though it sounds like she is just developing her skills in other areas first.

Sitting up from laying down is quite a complex movement so I would encourage you to give DD plenty of opportunities to practice.

If you have concerns about DD's general development, do have a word with your  Health Visitor for reassurance.

j would take her 2 see your hv as all mine was sittig up by 6mths does seem a little slow 4 the age hope everythin gos well

Hi Emma - the op said she can sit up unaided - but she just can't get herself from her tummy back to that position herself yet.

Katherine,

I think as some of the others have suggested your friend's babies are probably going from all fours to sitting which is definitely easier and ties in with crawling. Its great when you find them somewhere but never see them do the movement!
